Ukraine president Poroshenko said at an EU meeting in Brussels some remarkable things. He made a link between the MH17 investigation and the hesitation of the Netherlands in not signing the Ukraine–European Union Association Agreement.

These are the words of Poroshenko at October 20 2016. The interview in which these words were said can be seen here. At 1 minute 6 seconds in the video Poroshenko appears.

“We are having a very effective cooperation with the Dutch nation starting with the investigation in MH17 disaster and terrorist attack. It was mine decision when I trust the Dutch investigation to give them the leading role because they suffered the most. In that case I think that it would be a very dangerous precedent if ratification is not happening”.

In short, Poroshenko wanted “something for something ” or Quid  pro Quo.

The next day Dutch PM Rutte stated “it is not wise to link the MH17 investigation to the ratification of the Ukraine-EU treaty”.  Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported about the response of Rutte here.

  1. Don’t you (and Rutte?) see that something was cut off from the interview before “in that case”? By this phrase Poroshenko meant the possible failure to sign the Treaty by NL, and not what was said in the previous sentence in the edited video.

    As is:
“We are have a very effective cooperation with the Dutch nation starting from the investigation of MH17 disaster and terroristic attack. And that was my decision when I trust the Dutch investigating, give them the leading role as a nation who suffered the most. And, finishing with the all the program with the visa-free, with the all other program cooperation with Europe – in that case I think that it would be a very dangerous precedent if ratification is not happened. And we trust Dutch people, we trust the Netherlands, and we are absolutely sure that everything will be okay.”

So, Poroshenko’s English is far from perfect. I understand how he thought in Russian while speaking this. That sentence in the correct English would be: “And, in view of finishing adoption of visa-free regime and all the other programs for cooperation with Europe, I think it will be a very detrimental precedent if the Treaty has not been ratified.”
